Frank Vitkovic, Italian-Croatian former tennis and cricket player, self-employed painter and law-school dropout entered Australia post office at around 4:20 pm with the intent to kill a former friend, after exchanging words with Con Margelis, Vitkovic drew his ilegally modified M1 sawn-off caribine and tried to shoot Margelis, the gun jammed and Margelis ducked for cover, Viktovic started shooting at everyone on sight, killing Judith Anne Morris, Julie Faye McBean, Annunziata Avignone, Warren David Spencer, Michael Francis Mcguire, Marianne Jacoba Van Ewyk,Catherine Mary Dowling and Rodney Gerard Brown, Vitkovic gun was ripped from his hands by Donald McElroy and Tony Gioia who tackled him, Vitkovic then took his own life by jumpin off the building.
It is speculated that the cause of the attack was Vitkovic deppresion and hatred towards the world after a knee injury that forced him to quit Tennis.
