2023 UNLV shooting / Anthony Polito

On December 6, 2023, a shooting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) resulted in three deaths and one injury. The gunman, Anthony Polito (AP), was killed in a shootout with police. The shooting took place in Beam Hall, a building on the UNLV campus.

John Phillips for whatever reason thought it'd be a good idea to send AP the following message after the shooting:

"Good to see you made the news!!"​

Which obviously made LE look into him and his devices as well:




They apparently found nothing concerning, and also found no signs of Phillips' having prior knowledge of the attack, which really makes you wonder what could have possibly been the thought process behind that message? Imagine seeing your cousin on the news for killing 3 people?? That's the best thing he thought to say??? [ETA: more info on this message and cousin in a comment below]

All of this was extracted from LVMPD's publicized final report on the UNLV 2023 shooting, which I only mostly skimmed. I'm sure there's other interesting stuff in there someone could find if they wanted to look through it. It's only almost 300 pages.

I’m glad there’s more information on this case. His age contrasted with the location of attack was always strange to me. Good job on compiling all this, it looks like it took a while.

The thought process behind the message was maybe a "fuck you" sort of thing - if you're mad at a relative and are of a type psycho enough to do a mass shooting, why not attempt to drag them down with you, is the logic perhaps. Like what Lanza did with his brother and the ID.

Was his will notorized? As in, he actually sent that in, or was it just a thing he wrote but informally? Because if it's the former, that note, wut. Seems actually deluded.

and i dont think the will was official in any way, shape, or form lol. it doesn't have any type of stamp, or signature, or literally anything but rambly text, so it's probably the latter option you mentioned.

What was even the motive here? I read about this at the time but it's been a while. From skimming over it it just appears to be spite/personal grievance/having nothing better to do. But from the notes/his self descriptions/what I remember from his website he was clearly off.

he was a retired professor who didn’t get hired by UNLV and had a long history of rejection from other schools too. he'd regularly rant about his old school and colleagues. it seemed he felt ignored by academia in general and grew increasingly bitter over it. but if you also take into account his zodiac killer nonsense, he was just deeply delusional n narcissistic. his 'hit list' was only UNLV staff. the report did note none of the shooting victims were in a position AP had applied for.

TLDR: the message was mostly sarcastic in nature - Phillips described seeing a LV shooting on the news, and sent that message to AP as a way to poke fun at LV being on the news. he didn't know AP was even involved at the time. he also answered the police at his door in his underwear only. what a freaky family
