the event from which the phrase of "Drinking the Koolaid" emerged in reference to...
Jim Jones garnered around 900 members over time to "the people's temple" by advocating himself to marginalised communities such as black people, or just people who wanted racial equality, and eventually moved them all over with him to start a small community in Guyana. Typical cult stuff, cater to a particular community of people, call yourself God, get them thinking their money is for a good cause whilst having them feed the finances to keep your cult running, and then, if youre Jimmie Jones, sit back and relax, because you've got yourself followers.
Eventually, due to Jones' paranoia most probably of the cult falling apart, (and because he was a druggie), he eventually decided that the best route of action would be to have himself and all his followers die.
On November 18th, 1978, 900 members died either by drinking cyanide laced flavor-aid (contrary to the belief it was koolaid, it really was not), or by being shot. Many young children, who were not aware of the circumstances, were essentially tricked in to consuming the flavoraid by their caretaker (they would be unaware that it would kill them), or were forced to drink the flavoraid (you can hear the children cry in the death tape as response to this) . Jim Jones himself died of a self inflicted gunshot wound. Also, another misconception is that all of the followers willingly decided to commit suicide. Many were forced into doing so. If they refused to take the flavoraid, they'd be shot by security. Obviously, the children didn't have a choice at all. A couple believed what Jones was saying, and felt that they needed to die for the cause. But, take into mind that it was more murder than suicide...suicide is by own will, being pressured or deluded into suicide is still murder.
The members had already practiced the mass suicides beforehand a couple of times apparently as a test of loyalty for Jim Jones.
The Death Tape 1978 < a recording of jim jones's deranged speech, and the moment in which they all die.
